Assisting others in academic learning is very rewarding. I was a peer tutor at
Madison College in Wisconsin. At that college, I earned an
Associate's of Arts in Liberal Arts in 2012. I have been officially
trained in tutoring at Madison College by means of videos and
face-to-face classroom method as taught by the tutor office
One method that had been taught would be asking students how he or she
learns. Most students fall within three categories of learning such
as, Auditory/Listening, Visual/Seeing, and Tactile/Hands-on learners.
Also, the students social personality could be taken into account.
For example, whether a person is introverted, extroverted, or a
little of both. Getting to know more about how the student processes
new information will help him or her in the long run.
Although I have more experience with helping adults, I am equally concerned about the
welfare of younger students. The Socratic Method is the used for my sessions so the student is will be actively involved in his or her learning, not just be lectured and talked at, by promoting critical thinking skills. Learning is NOT throwing up facts by memory and NOT just settling for a simple answer. Learning is examining the many sides to an argument, questions, concerns, and solving problems.
